The apparent idyll is deceptive – rural Ohio can be very cold even in summer, especially for a junkie like Cody who has been clean for 45 days, but who still has to struggle with various demons. Because there is no room in a home for assisted living, he is sleeping in his car on the edge of town, saving the money for a motel. He spends his days working in a wood mill and attends meetings for people suffering from addiction. His life is a fragile attempt at a healing process which is put to the test when his drug-addicted ex-girlfriend shows up. With a heavy heart, Cody must choose a clean break to save his soul…
“Union County” depicts a crumbling America and its underclass as portrayed by Richard Avedon in his “In the American West” and sung about by Bruce Springsteen in sombre songs. In this social climate, an impending tumble into complete isolation from society or a desperate act of violence is never far away.

Die Idylle täuscht – auch das ländliche, sommerliche Ohio kann sehr kalt sein, besonders für einen Junkie wie Cody, der zwar seit 45 Tagen clean ist, aber noch mit diversen Dämonen zu kämpfen hat. Da kein Platz in einem Heim für betreutes Wohnen frei ist, schläft er am Stadtrand in seinem Auto, auch um das Geld für ein Motel zu sparen. Tagsüber arbeitet er in einer Holzfabrik und besucht Meetings von Suchtkranken. Sein Leben ist der fragile Versuch eines Heilungsprozesses, der auf die Probe gestellt wird, als seine drogenabhängige Ex-Freundin bei ihm auftaucht. Cody muss sich schweren Herzens für einen harten Schnitt entscheiden, um seine Seele zu retten …
„Union County“ zeigt ein brüchiges Amerika und seine Unterschicht, wie sie Richard Avedon in „In the American West“ portraitierte und Bruce Springsteen in düsteren Songs besang. Der drohende Absturz ins völlige soziale Aus oder ein verzweifelter Akt der Gewalt sind in diesem sozialen Klima immer präsent.
