„Helikopters cirkelen dreigend in de lucht, ’s nacht trekken zoeklampen witgele strepen over de mistige waterspiegel. Wanneer het noodlot zich voltrekt, blijft het stil. Lucie’s reactie kan ook ditmaal vanalles betekenen. Maar het feit dat Van Coillie het onkenbare en onpeilbare heeft kunnen vastleggen op camera, lijkt een klein wonder. De menselijke psyche blijkt weeral eens dieper dan eender welk meer.“

„Zonder Meer is so carefully written that most of the concrete events and conclusions stay in a blur. Meltse Van Coillie shows a knack for visual storytelling, though, and with the help of her cinematographer and co-editor Harm Dens she creates a visual ballad consisting of long, beautifully composed shots. Light and shadows play in the dark as the search goes on and the sound scheme consisting of the sounds of nature and murmur of a tourist site is occasionally broken by the sound of a helicopter. The naturally warm, almost analogue-looking colour scheme serves the film well, while the boxy 4:3 aspect ratio and the use of shallow focus help us concentrate on our little protagonist and her inner turmoil. Zonder Meer is quite an intense visceral viewing experience.“

„Der 14-minütige Kurzfilm, der seine Weltpremiere auf dem Leuven International Short Film Festival und seine internationale Premiere auf der 71. Berlinale feierte, erzählt mit wenig Worten, aber starken Bildern aus der Sicht eines Kindes, wie es die dramatischen Ereignisse aufnimmt. Hier rückt nicht die Angst der Eltern in den Fokus, sondern die kleine Hauptprotagonistin versucht nachzuspüren, wie es sich anfühlt zu ertrinken oder tot zu sein. Auch versteht sie den Trubel nicht, sondern langweilt sich eher, da ja der See gesperrt ist. Stets aus ihrer Perspektive präsentiert, wird auch für das Publikum das eigentliche Drama zu einem Hintergrundrauschen.“

„It’s one of the great mysteries to humankind – what is it like being dead? A bold thought that not all adults dare to allow themselves. But the innocence we project on children adds another layer to it: the child is learning how to empathize. This is why we developed the further narrative line of the film: the disappearance and possible drowning of a boy. Where adults are alarmed and imagine what it must be like losing their own child like that, the children are more interested in the commotion itself. Instead of empathizing with the one’s coping with this tragic loss, Lucie, the protagonist of this film, tries to imagine what it’s like being that boy gone missing. How does he feel, being dead?“
